Strengthening Families Program
Who:   A program for youth ages 10 - 14 and their parents/caregivers
 
What: Family skills building curriculum designed to bring families closer together by having fun.
 
Program
Format:
Every Tuesday for 7 weeks, 5:30 - 8:00pm, dinner and childcare are included!  Parent and youth meet separately for the first hour then come together for the second hour for games and family projects.
 
Designed To: Help parents build on their strengths in showing love and setting limits, help youth develop skills in handling peer pressure and building a positive future.
 
Where: Tuesdays starting February 8 - March 22
 
Where: St. Peter Lutheran church 1079 Riverside Drive, Battle Creek, MI

Communication Forum (6:00pm - 8:00pm)
Location:  Calhoun County Department of Human Services (FIA), 3rd floor conference room. 
This is your chance to be heard by the Department of Human Services (FIA) supervisors and hear what is new at the agency.  Tell us how we can make your experience as a foster parent better and provide you with the support you need.  We value the input foster parents have given us in the past.  So come be a part of the discussion with Jerome Colwell, Cyntheal Cooper and Sandra Milner.  Please RSVP with Sandra Milner at 269-966-1717 and include any issues or concerns you with to discuss.  This forum may be canceled if there is a lack of response.

Adoption Training (9:00am - 12:00pm)
Location:  Calhoun County Department of Human Services (Department of Human Services (FIA)), 3rd floor conference room.

Dave Stevens (269-966-1728) and Carita Fox (269-966-1628), Calhoun County Department of Human Services (FIA) Adoption Workers will be conducting the training.  This training is open to all foster, relative and kinship parents who have an interest in adopting or are going through the adoption process at this time.  Parties who are currently going through the adoptive process are encouraged to attend this training.  Previous adoptive parents are also invited to this training.  The training will include an orientation to the adoptive process, an overview of the legal process, post adoption services and some information on the needs of children available for adoption.

This is an eight-week workshop for relative caregivers, especially grandparents raising grandchildren.  The class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm - 8:30pm beginning March 8th.

     Refining Parenting Skills
     Building Relationships
     Working with School and Community
     Managing Finances
     Exploring Legal Issues
     Looking to the Future

Third Annual Teen Literature Seminar

 
When: 7:45 am - 4:00 pm
Where: Kalamazoo Valley Community College - Commons Area.
Who: Anyone who works with teens:  teachers, librarians, scout leaders, church group leaders, parents/foster parents, college students.
What: Learn to identify the warning signs of teens in distress and ways to steer them toward the help they need.  Award-winning authors Laurie Halse Anderson and Terry Trueman will discuss how they revealed their characters' "silent screams" in the popular novels.  Discover how great books and other materials can be used to help teens deal with their problems.
Cost: $20.00 seminar fee (lunch on your own)
